Description

Spanakopita is a very delicious pie with feta cheese and spinach, a popular dish in Greek cuisine. It has a very impressive appearance, especially if you shape it like a spiral and sprinkle sesame seeds on top. Of course, you can simplify the task by placing rolled-out dough on the bottom of the dish to cover the edges, trimming any excess. Place the filling inside, cover it with dough, pinch the edges, brush with egg, and bake in the oven. However, the spiral-snail shape looks beautiful on the table, and your family will definitely be impressed!

Spanakopita is traditionally made with phyllo dough, but if you don't have it on hand, you can use puff pastry as a substitute. You should only cut the finished pie with spinach and feta when it has cooled, or the filling might leak. By the way, this pastry is even tastier when served cold. Let's get cooking!

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Finely chop the onion and sauté it until golden.

  2. Allow the frozen spinach to thaw at room temperature for about 15 minutes. Then, sauté it briefly in a pan with a bit of heavy cream.

  3. Crumble the feta cheese in a salad bowl using a fork.

  4. Add the cooled spinach and onions to the crumbled feta cheese, along with finely chopped dill, minced garlic, a pinch of salt, and a bit of black pepper, if desired. Mix everything together well. The filling is ready.

  5. Roll out the puff pastry dough a bit, and then cut it into strips about 5 cm wide. The length of the strips can vary.

  6. Melt the heavy cream and use it to brush the pastry strips.

  7. Place the filling on top of the pastry strips.

  8. Gently pull up the pastry from the sides with your fingers, being careful not to tear it, and pinch the edges closed.

  9. Starting from the center, place our "sausages" with the filling in a spiral, seam side down. When connecting one "sausage" to another, brush the pinched area with olive oil.

  10. Beat an egg with a fork and brush our future snail-shaped pie with it. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes at 180-190 degrees Celsius.

  11. The pie with spinach and feta cheese should have a beautiful golden color. And what an aroma throughout the house! It's clear right away – our spanakopita is ready! Cover the freshly baked pie with a napkin and let it cool completely. Enjoy your meal!
